The island was one of the leading trading routes between India and China. The Portuguese, French, Dutch, and English traders mentioned the island frequently in the ship logs. Nowadays, the region derives much of its income from tourism. Although more recognized as a tropical paradise island, Phuket is still an excellent destination for the adventure seeker or eco-tourism. Inland Phuket has many opportunities for treks and other eco-activities, including different voluntourism that take many forms, like elephant or marine conservation projects. One should avoid the elephant treks even if an elephant camp claims to be "responsible" for its animals. The core of this business is rotten because wild elephants won't let humans ride on top of them. So to tame a wild elephant, it is tortured as a baby to break its spirit completely. The process is called Phajaan, or "the crush."
